Tongue and Lip Tie

You probably don't spend a lot of time thinking about the small fold of tissue beneath your tongue or upper lip. However, if your child is having trouble with speech or feeding, you should learn more about the labial and lingual frenulum. These folds of tissue can cause movement restrictions in the lips and tongue that make speech and feeding difficult.

Up to five percent of newborns are diagnosed with an enlarged labial or lingual frenulum. This not only affects feeding in newborns, but can also affect speech in toddlers and children. And unless your speech and language pathologist has an orofacial myofunctional background, your child risks being mis-diagnosed.
